The expansive peaceful beaches of this natural North Sea paradise are perfect for long walks. Why not lay out your towel on Banjaard beach, have a swim and watch the seabirds? The blue flag flies over the clear waters indicating the impeccable cleanliness of the beach and the dyke bordering this part of the coastline protects against floods and makes for a lovely walk.
The flat terrain of the Netherlands makes it heaven for cyclists. Pack a picnic, grab your bike and spend a whole day admiring the stunning vistas of sea and sky.
Be sure to take the time to visit some towns and villages like Zierikzee or Veere.
Zierikzee is on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland to the north of the Eastern Scheldt. It dates back to the 10th century and experienced great prosperity in the 13th. It is historically important and the whole town is listed. Take the time to visit the Nobel Gate, which is like something out of a medieval fairytale, and the House De Haene, which is also known as Templar House. The narrow cobbled streets and the old rigs moored in the historic port in summer will delight all ages.
Veere is even more impressive and is considered to be the jewel in the country’s crown. A medieval city that is now just a village, for a long time it held the monopoly for importing wool and was the first city in the Netherlands to grow tobacco. This made the city incredibly wealthy, resulting in the stunning architecture you can still see today. It’s not to be missed!
